North
Geography: The soil in the North was rocky and thin this wasn't good for farming. Some terrains in the North were swamps, coastal plains, and rolling hills next to the Appalachain Mountains. Economy: The economy in the north was based off of maunfacturing and buisness and steam powered machines operated non slave labor. Farming was also a part of the economy but it was on a smaller scale then the south. Transportation: Transportation in the north was well developed because of all of the manufacturing and large sities. This effected the transportatoin need in the north so it increased and added road systems, canals, steamboats, and 20,000 miles of railroad. This transported not only people but the goods manufactured in the north to other cities in the U.S. Society: The northern society was very diverse due to the urban centers. The reason it was very diverse was due to the in 1830 the north abolished slavery, so free slaves from the south escaped and went here. Since the north was mostly urban, there were fast paced life styles rather than areas out of the cities. |
South
Geography: The soil in the south was rich and fertile unlike the north which is good for farming. There are mild winters and hot humid summers. Economy: The economy in the south was based off of cash crops. The major cash crop grown was cotton which later on in the 19th century was known as the "king". Cash crops were grown on plantaoins one crop exclusivly at a time. Transportation: The transportation in the south was less advanced than the north because the south was mainly rural. There were less than 10,000 miles of railroad tracks in the south. The only main water way was the Mississippi river. Society: The south was less diverse in the north mainly because of two things slavery and its rural. The south also had no legal rights which means that the people who lived there were limited in what they could do. |
Sectionalism: to value a region rather than an entire country.
The north and south contributed to sectionalism because the north was worried more about there area getting developed rather as a whole country and there were very many differences between the two regions mainly opposite beliefs than the other.
